Design of a Versatile and Durable Transtibial Prosthesis
This project was developed through extensive user research, including meetings with amputees, discussions on forums, and collaboration with the Brugman Hospital Trauma Center. The goal was to understand both the physical and emotional needs of users and address the limitations of traditional prostheses. Existing models often lack durability, are incompatible with different shoes, and struggle with daily environmental challenges like water, dust, and salt.
The result is a lightweight, low-maintenance prosthesis, designed for real-life flexibility. It allows users to walk on the beach, take a shower, ride a bike, or switch between different types of footwear—even high heels. Made from 100% recyclable plastic, this design offers a resilient and adaptable solution, improving both functional comfort and emotional well-being.
To ensure a perfect fit for every user, the prosthesis is 3D-printed, allowing for custom adaptation to any morphology. While still a first prototype, this project represents a step toward more user-centered, practical prosthetic solutions.
